State team settles for second position after losing to Jharkhand 0-4 in the finals of the coveted national U-13 competition held in Cuttack, Odisha on Thursday
Itanagar : The sub-junior girls’ football team of Arunachal Pradesh settled for a silver medal at the Hero Sub-junior Girls’ National Football Championship, which came to an end in Cuttack, Odisha on Thursday.
The Arunachal team, which had already made history by reaching the finals of the coveted tournament for the first time, however, could not get past the final hurdle to win gold as team Jharkhand, which was considered to be a much stronger team, got the better of the Arunacali girls by 4 goals to nil.
Earlier, while Jharkhand had come back from two goals down to beat Bihar on penalties to reach the finals, Team Arunachal Pradesh had produced more of a dominant display against Gujarat to make their way to the finals.
Congratulating the girls, team’s head coach Kipa Bharat said, “We are very proud of our girls and the coaching staff. The way our girls have performed throughout the tournament and made our Arunachal proud in the national platform has been extraordinary.”
“It is big achievement for all us as we finished in the second position in the prestigious championship. We are sure that this historic feat by our girls will inspire many,” Arunachal Pradesh Football Association secretary Kipa Ajay said.
The department of sport and youth affairs also lauded the team for their feat.
“Well played team Arunachal Pradesh, you gave your best, but it was just not your day. Congratulation to team Jharkhand on winning the Sub-Junior Girl’s National Football Championship 2019-20,” the department said in a tweet.
