Itanagar: The capital police on Sunday arrested three persons who allegedly set fire to a vehicle and killed a dog outside the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president and Arunachal East MP Tapir Gao in Itanagar on Friday morning.

As per the police, the main accused of the incident, Tongom Jomoh (42), was arrested from Kasikata Bagan, a remote village in Assam's Lakhimpur district, around 5.50 am on Sunday. His alleged partners in crime -- Deo Tayem (24) and Gayam Pao (25) -- were picked up from Naharlagun and Pappu Nallah areas near Itanagar on Saturday morning.

The trio belong to Seppa in East Kameng district, as per the police.

Capital superintendent of police Tumme Amo said that “following the inputs provided during the interrogation of Tayem and Pao and after working on intelligence reports, his team reached Kasikata Bagan and nabbed the main accused on Sunday.”

A driver, Altab Hussain (30), was also arrested as a witness. He was, however, released after interrogation as he had no idea about the incident that Jomoh was involved in and was hired only for transportation purpose, the SP said.

A case has been filed against the trio under IPC- 435/436/511/429 and a few other sections, Amo said. “As of now, I cannot comment whether the accused were backed up by any insurgent or political group. They are for now in police custody and we would be able to get more information after further interrogation,'' said Amo when questioned on the involvement of any other individual of political group into the incident.

“Jomoh has been alleging that Tapir Gao had issued permanent resident certificates to the non-Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) communities settled in the state. He also gave the party ticket to deputy chief minister Chowna Mein and BJP’s wining candidate from Lekang constituency, Jummum Ete Deori (who according to Jamoh are also non-APSTS). This was the sole reason for the incident,” the SP informed.

Unidentified men on Friday set a vehicle on fire and killed a dog in front of Gao’s house around 6.30 am, barely two days after the new BJP government took charge in Arunachal Pradesh.

CCTV footage showed them taking the vehicle to the gate of Gao’s house in Itanagar and setting it on fire.
