Itanagar: The Roing police on Saturday arrested eight miscreants after they dashed through a check-post at Meka Tinali, resulting in a chase and shoot-out.
Three Chinese-made pistols along with 12 live rounds, a gas cutter and other equipment used for committing bank and ATM theft were seized from the accused who were identified as Pramjyoti Pegu (40), Maneswar Lamu (30), Saddam Doley (30), Fazal Haque (32), Nirmal Das (30), Kanaram Basumatary (32), Mongol Narzary (35), and Agostine Mosihary (33).
Roing, the headquarters of Lower Dibang Valley district, is around 360 km from Itanagar.
The police team, working on an intelligence input about some robbers having entered the Roing area to target banks in the town, had set up the check-post at Meka Tinali to search vehicles.
During the course of the checking, 10 people – five in an Alto car bearing registration number AS-01-JC-6876 and the other five on three motorcycles – sped through the check-post at about 5.15 pm despite being stopped by the police.
The police followed the five people in the car fleeing towards Shantipur and caught them a little beyond the check-point. Another team led by SP SK Sain followed the three motorcycles fleeing toward Bomjir and intercepted them at the Bomjir bridge at about 6 pm.
On being stopped, the miscreants opened fire at the police team. A bullet passed through the Deputy SP’s car and another hit Constable N Wangapan on his bulletproof jacket. The police fire in retaliation and were able to nab three miscreants while two others managed to flee from the scene taking advantage of the darkness.
Sain lauded the efforts of the team and congratulated them for the bravery shown during the operation.
